Basic care requirements for maintaining a basket plant:
Plant in a basket and hang in an area that receives low to medium light.
Water every two to three days regularly. In winter, water slightly less frequently.
Fertilize every month during growing seasons with good compost
Light
Basket plants prefer indirect, low to medium light. Don't place planters too close to windows as these plants are prone to scorched leaves. If it receives too much sun, leaves will purple, so be sure to change conditions if this happens.
Soil and Fertilizer
Soil- and peat-based potting mixes work best for basket plants. Fertilizers formulated for flowering plants make great amendments to any insufficient soil.
For water-based fertilizers, apply at least once a month. For slow-release fertilizers apply every three to four months.
Water
Water basked plants every two to three days in the spring, summer, and fall. In winter, cut back on watering so the top two-thirds of soil dries out between waterings. Ensure that the pot and catch dish are free of standing water.
Bloom Timing, Appearance, and Fragrance
Basket plants bloom tiny white flowers during the months of March through October. They are numerous and highly fragrant. To encourage blooming, feed your plant with a fertilizer like Bonemeal once in 40 days aimed toward flowering plants.
